ATHLETE COMMITTEE MEETING
March 2004

In attendance:

Robbie, Levon, Robert, Miriam, Leslie, Gordon and Jill. Regrets: Tony, Shawn

Athletes elected a chair person (Robbie) for this meeting. Athletes then reviewed the minutes from February. Some adjustments were made to the minutes.

Current Business:

Athletes took turns bringing up issues which were then discussed by committee members as a group:

Upcoming Events/News/Updates:

1. The floor hockey team that went to the Nationals brought home Team Ontario pins for the rest of Region 11 floor hockey athletes. The team has the rest of the month off. The season will finish at the end of April.

2. There was poor weather in PEI for the Nationals. The committee is thankful that everyone returned safely. Some games were postponed or cancelled due to a leak in the roof at the venue as well the weather.

3. Wednesday March 3rd will be the last ski practice of the year. This is because the condition of the hill is not good. The weather has been too mild. The ski team has not participated in tournaments yet. The coach does not want to rush the athletes on the ski team. Additionally, the team’s equipment is rented from the facility that they currently use. Equipment is very expensive.

4. An upcoming tournament for floor hockey (hosted by Mississauga) may take place at Variety Village. Those involved need to think about the convenience of this venue (for both the Metro Leafs and for other regions).

5. Indoor soccer will run until the end of March. Summer soccer hasn’t been confirmed. Athletes can sometimes run into difficulty with ODSP when they go traveling (i.e. they wonder how much money you are spending).

6. Some athletes are unable to go to Kingston because of the distance.

7. Some athletes question why certain athletes get to go to provincials all the time. Some committee members suggested that athletes who are good at their sports and who do not require a lot of support (medication, attention, behavioural support) get to go to distance tournaments.

8. There will be the 14th annual Old – Timers hockey game at exhibition stadium. Volunteers are needed for this event. They need to contact Lynn Miller. Athletes will get to meet the players. The event will start at 2:00p.m.

9. There will be a torch run this summer (earlier than June this year because the provincials are being held the second week in June)

10. The summer provincials are being held from the 10th to the 14th of June. There will be 20 athletes participating in 5-pin bowling, 4 athletes participating in 10-pin bowling, and 19 athletes participating in swimming.

11. There will be a Special Olympics fundraising tournament for basketball held on March 27th.

12. On Saturday June 19th at Wayne Gretzky’s restaurant there will be a fundraiser. Wayne Gretzky’s is located on Blue Jay Way.

13. Athletes need to call Amy to register for the bowling tournament on March 27th. Registration forms must be sent to the office. Athletes should put the money received in pledges into their bank accounts and write a cheque for the amount in pledges. Cash will not be accepted. If you do not have cheques, money orders will be accepted. Athletes should bring pledges to the tournament on the 27th. Many committee members are participating. The bowling practice on March 28th will be cancelled because people will be from the tournament.

14. At the tournament there will be members of Toronto Argonauts, Raptors, Blue Jays, the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team, the Leafs and possibly Elvis Stoico. There will be 200-300 people at the tournament. Newtonbrook is a large bowling alley, but it will probably be closed to the general public during the tournament. Team members will wear T-shirts that are being specially made (not uniform shirts). There will be no other dress code.

15. Several tournaments are coming up (May 8th in Mississauga, April 3rd in Richmond Hill, and March 27th in Markham).

Budget/Cutbacks/Fundraising:

16. Recently, Ontario Special Olympics did some fundraising at the Outdoor Adventure Show. A lot of money was raised.

17. Athletes who volunteered at the show received money to cover the cost of taking a cab home. In many cases, athletes had to add their own money to cover the cost of getting home. One member of the committee suggested that athletes should have gotten a receipt from the cab driver. Cabs typically charge more than the fixed cost of an airport limo, depending on how far you have to travel. Cab drivers may ‘take you for a ride’ if you are unclear about the directions you need to go. Additionally, food at the show was very expensive (three to four times the cost of food regularly).

18. One soccer team receives new uniforms every year (this is the philosophy of the coach). The team does fundraising to obtain the money for these. Additionally, the coach has her own silk screening business (thus saving money). She is willing to do uniforms at cost for other teams.

Athlete Empowerment Issues:

19. On May 8th there will be a dinner and dance bowling tournament. There is also a swimming tournament that day. Conflicts are very frustrating for multi-sport athletes. Athletes need to speak up about there feelings about conflicts.

20. One committee member updated us on the progress of the Provincial Rights that are being written. It is still in the rough draught stage at the moment. It may include an event video/audio kit, but there is no final format yet.

21. The athlete empowerment site will be available shortly.

22. Athletes should be careful about giving out their phone numbers. Coaches and head office have your phone number, but it is not given out to athletes unless you give it out.

Other Important Issues:

23. One member of the committee is going to the provincials for swimming.

24. Athletes going to the provincials will require a new outfit. Some athletes who have never been to provincials will require a whole new outfit.

25. On one bowling team, golf shirts were introduced for this reason.

26. Power lifting was a failure as a sport in Region 11. It is an expensive sport and there are very few athletes interested.

27. One member wondered what was happening with community council meetings.

28. Bayview Village has been postponed again. Jill will write a letter to Bayview Village regarding the situation. Committee members wondered when they will get the chance to go. Jill will be looking for another venue.

29. Jill will be emailing the student from Ryerson to find out her schedule for coming to a meeting.

30. Some members of the committee suggested that the B-team for floor hockey should be nominated as team of the year, and that their coach, Bob, should be nominated for coach of the year.

The next meeting will take place on Monday April 5th, 2004.
